  • Thrifting Goes Mainstream: Savers’ expansion reflects the growing popularity of second-hand shopping in Australia.

Australians Love the Thrill of the Thrift

Australians are diving headfirst into the world of second-hand shopping, motivated more by the thrill of the find than just saving money, according to a new study by global thrift retailer Savers.

The research, commissioned by Savers to coincide with their expansion into New South Wales, revealed that over 80% of Australians have dabbled in second-hand shopping, with 74% of regular thrifters boasting a wardrobe with at least a quarter of pre-loved items.

Surprisingly, the driving force behind this trend seems to be the excitement of the hunt, with 42% citing “treasure hunting” as their primary motivator compared to just 23% who prioritize saving money. This suggests a shift in consumer values, according to Savers Australia.

Thrifting and Personal Style

The study also highlights a link between thrifting and personal style. Half of the respondents perceive thrifters as more creative with their fashion choices, especially among younger generations (60% of Gen Z).

Sustainability is a Plus

Sustainability plays a role too, with three in ten Australians, particularly younger demographics (40% of Gen Z and Millennials), viewing second-hand shopping as a positive environmental choice. Additionally, over a third associate savvy shopping habits with a more responsible image.

“While affordability and environmental benefits continue to fuel the thrifting trend, the research unveils a deeper connection,” said Michael Fisher, managing director of Savers Australia. “Thrifting has become a community activity for savvy treasure hunters who enjoy the thrill of the find.”

Going Green with Fashion Choices

The research underscores a growing emphasis on sustainable fashion. A significant 81% of Australians acknowledge its importance, with women and younger generations leading the charge in recognizing the environmental impact of clothing choices.

This shift in mindset is reflected in purchasing habits, with over half (52%) considering sustainability a key factor when buying clothes, and two-thirds admitting to adapting their shopping behaviors to be more eco-friendly.

Aussies Breathe New Life into Old Clothes

Interestingly, the study revealed that Australians are not just embracing pre-loved clothing, but also extending the lifespan of their existing wardrobes. Almost half (45%) utilize various methods like restyling (25%), fabric repurposing (11%), and adding embellishments (9%), with Gen Z leading the way at 56%.

Savers Expands with a Focus on Sustainability

This research coincides with the opening of Savers’ Hoxton Park store in Sydney, offering a vast selection of pre-loved items across various categories, particularly fashion. Savers sources their merchandise through donations collected by non-profit partners.
